Choosing the right tyres for your vehicle
When it comes to safety on the road, a vehicle’s tyres are the most important factor to consider. If cars, motorcycles or other vehicles cannot grip the road properly through the wheels then even the best drivers will have problems avoiding accidents. They should be checked regularly and replaced immediately if there is insufficient tread (less than 1.6mm) or any bulges or tears. When buying a second-hand car or other vehicle you should always make sure that it has been fitted with suitable tyres.
Replacing a tyre on your vehicle can mean having to make difficult choices when faced with the wide variety of types and prices available. Some are designed especially for high-performance vehicles, others for various different weather conditions. When deciding which ones to buy you should consider the kind of driving you are likely to be doing and the kind of conditions you may encounter.
Although all new tyres are subject to EU standards, you should not assume that they are therefore all the same. Simply buying the cheapest set you can find is not necessarily a good idea. Neither is going straight to your vehicle’s main dealer. Independent garages will often have a better selection for most makes of cars and motorcycles and will provide more impartial advice on the best choice for you.
Cars, motorcycles and other vehicles vary a lot in the amount of wear their tyres are subjected to. If you find you have problems braking or steering properly then check each tyre carefully. Replace it straight away if there is any fault – doing so might help to save your life.
